The Debacle that was Thanksgiving

I have pretty much taken over the holidays in our family. It's not that I like to cook big, extravagant meals, or even that I particularly love hosting gatherings...We just have the biggest house. There's plenty of room for everyone, and it also makes it easier now that I have Ryleigh and Reagan, to be able to keep them home and everyone come to us.

I'm not a great cook. I can cook. I can follow a recipe. But I'm just not really sure I'm ready for that which is cooking a giant turkey. So anyway, Matt, being the amazing husband that he is, purchased a groupon for Thanksgiving catering. It seemed pretty amazing. We were going to get turkey, dressing, all the fixin's and dessert. My parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles planned to cook everything else. Not that we really needed much else, but we are just a go overboard kind of family. Wednesday afternoon, Matt took me to pick up the food we ordered. We came to the address listed for the business, and I happily went in to pick up our gourmet thanksgiving dinner (that I didn't have to cook!!). Well...I go into this office building, which seems like a strange place to pick up food, and there is a very long line of angry-looking people. So, I get my place in line and quickly ask what's going on. Apparently, their delivery truck that was bringing everyone's food to this building to be picked up, was in a car accident. ALL of the food was ruined. This was a small business, and there was literally one lady trying to deal with all of these hysterical people, because they didn't have the expected food....the day before Thanksgiving. She told everyone that their plan was to re-cook all of the ordered meals, and schedule deliveries for Thanksgiving day. I patiently waited, and when it was my turn to get my delivery scheduled, the poor lady looked blankly at her computer screen and started crying. Hard. She lost EVERYTHING. All those deliveries that she had scheduled...gone. I felt sorry for her, and told her just to give me a call back later that evening once they figured out what they were going to do...but by the time I made it back down to the car, I had pretty much already decided that we weren't getting our Thanksgiving meal. She never called, so I tried calling her several times with no answer....I had my WTF am I going to do moment...and then Matt came to the rescue. He calmed me down, took me to the grocery store...and he and I cooked all night for Thanksgiving the next day. I'm actually glad everything happened the way it did. I didn't *want* to cook, but once we were forced, he and I had fun doing it together. :)

And on a side note, Matt got an email from groupon at 11pm , the night before Thanksgiving, apologizing because no one was going to get their food. I feel bad for all the people before me who scheduled their deliveries. I bet there were plenty that didn't get the email, and were waiting for their food deliveries on Thanksgiving. What a mess!

For our family, it all worked out, and Thanksgiving was lovely. My aunt Julie, uncle Mike and cousins Stephanie and Haley came in from Lubbock, and stayed the weekend. We went shopping at the galleria on Black Friday. That was a little crazy, but fun. All in all, a really good Thanksgiving weekend! :)

I am, however, very mad at myself because I didn't take any pictures. The only ones I have from that weekend are a couple that my aunt took with her cell phone when we were at the galleria. Grrrrr
