My poor Ryleigh.

Ryleigh had a severe urinary tract infection about a month and a half ago, and it was extremely stressful because her temps got really high (up to 104-105) for a little over a week. She was completely miserable, and I pretty much just rocked her all day long because she didn’t want me to put her down. Her doctor sent us to Children’s medical center (which is what we did yesterday), to get this procedure done, because she was worried that the UTI might have been caused by something called vesicoureteral reflux. She said the UTI could have just been a 1 time thing, but she wanted to have her checked for this reflux problem, because if she had it, and we didn’t do something about it, the UTIs might start reoccurring.

The procedure was pretty simple, but stressful. They basically put a catheter in her bladder and filled her bladder up with liquid, and watched to see where it was going. It was stressful because my poor Ryleigh does not really do well with strangers right now…especially when they touch her. lol They completely strapped her down to this board with her hands over her head. She looked so sad and scared that I thought I was going to start crying. Ugh, I’m such a baby when it comes to my babies.

Anyway……the procedure confirmed that she does have vesicoureteral reflux…which according to mine and my husband’s reading last night, happens in 1 % of infants. Basically, when the urine makes it to the bladder, it’s supposed to stay there until she pees…but instead, it is going back up into her ureters to her kidneys. They said that it’s bad, but not severe....but they are really concerned that it is happening on both sides.

So? Now I have to wait on a call from her pediatrician to see what’s next. The doctor at children’s said that we will probably get referred to a urologist, where more tests will be done...and then they will decide what action needs to be taken. Sometimes, nothing is done. Sometimes surgery is done. The doctor told us that a lot of times; it will be recommended that the child goes on a small daily dose of antibiotics to keep the urine bacteria free so that UTIs are less likely to happen, because the infections can cause damage to the kidneys. And that a in a lot of cases, the problem will go away on its own as the child grows.

I hope my poor baby is okay. :\
